Merry Christmas
It cracks me up every year when I see it. A house on my street, in years past, has had a nativity scene, an inflatable snowman, and an inflatable Santa. What was funny about it was that the Santa was malfunctioning in a way that made it look like Santa was bowing down to the nativity. I used to joke that it was a commentary on the commercialization of Christmas, or that it was what the real Saint Nicholas would have done in an encounter with Jesus.
Unfortunately, the nativity has been removed this year, and Santa is functioning properly. This has me thinking, too. What if, the only way these people could get their Santa to work properly was to remove the nativity. I don’t know the neighbors, nor am I inclined to believe such a thing, but what if that was God’s commentary on the commercialization of Christmas? What if God was trying to tell them the real meaning of Christmas, and they got it wrong?
In any case, I was disappointed to see the nativity removed. It seems like one more person has missed the meaning of Christmas. You see, Christmas is not about giving. It’s about a gift. May the gift of forgiveness through Jesus, our Lord, fill your heart this year.
