Church on Christmas Day?

Christmas was a little different for us, this year.

In years past, we would spend the night at my in-laws’ house Christmas Eve, and celebrate Christmas in the morning by opening presents, having a good breakfast, and going to church with the family. We would then pack up, and go over to my parents’ house, spend the night, and celebrate Christmas the next morning with my family.

This year was the first year since my sister-in-law moved to New York that she didn’t come home for Christmas, and with a two-year-old in the house, we decided to start some of our own Christmas traditions. One of our new traditions was to wake up in our own house Christmas morning, and–since our own church had a service this morning–going to church. In order to include our families, we invited them to join us at Church.

My in-laws were leaving town, but my parents happily joined us, since their church did NOT have a service this morning. This was a surprise to me. I’ve always had a deep respect for their pastor, with his theologically deep sermons and tendency to include apologetics. I never expected him to cancel church on a Christian holiday. The church did have four Christmas eve services, but what better way to celebrate Christ coming to earth than by spending the morning worshipping him with your church family?

There are some churches that have an extra service if Christmas doesn’t fall on a Sunday. I’m not bothered when a church doesn’t do that. In fact, growing up, my family only went to church on Christmas if fell on Sunday. What I don’t understand is why a church would cancel a Sunday morning worship service just because it falls on Christmas.

What do you think? Let me know in the comments.
