There are some churches that have an extra service if Christmas doesn’t fall on a Sunday. I’m not bothered when a church doesn’t do that. In fact, growing up, my family only went to church on Christmas if fell on Sunday. What I don’t understand is why a church would cancel a Sunday morning worship service just because it falls on Christmas.

I’ve been aware of this problem for some time, but something brought it to my attention recently. In the restaurant business, Christians are perceived to be the worst people to wait on. Waiters and waitresses don’t like the “after church” crowd, because they treat them worse, and tip them lower. Imagine working on a Sunday and getting paid less to work harder. I’ve always strived to overcome this stereotype, and bring it to the attention of my friends, but recently something made me angry.

A church here in the detroit area has come up with an interesting marketing campaign. They have posted signs around town containing messages from Satan about how much he hates the church. This has sparked enough controversy to reach national news. I was particularly interested in a person in one of the news stories who was apparently bothered by the fact that a church would say anything about Satan. Seems like churches should be talking about Satan. Just my opinion.

Every group of people has their own lingo that they use. CEOs, mechanics, doctors, lawyers, sports fans, and engineers all have their own sets of jargon that outsiders don’t understand. This can be a problem when they are trying to communicate something to a person who is not part of their group. Christians, too, have a language that others don’t understand. Therefore, Christians sometimes have to get past a language barrier in order to effectively communicate the truths of the Christian religion. The following is a (tongue in cheek) guide to Christianese.
